Tata Motors to use JLR architecture for Avinya range of EV cars

Tata Motors, through its electric vehicle subsidiary, has announced a strategic partnership with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to source electrified architecture for the development of its ‘Avinya’ range of electric vehicles (EVs). Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM) and Jaguar Land Rover, both wholly-owned subsidiaries of Tata Motors, have formalized this collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The agreement involves TPEM licensing JLR’s electrified modular architecture (EMA) platform in exchange for a royalty fee, which will be utilized for the development of the Avinya series of electric cars. Additionally, TPEM and JLR will enter into an engineering services agreement (ESA) to support TPEM’s content requirements for the first vehicle development.

JLR’s EMA platform will serve as the foundation for Tata Motors’ next generation of electric mid-sized SUVs targeted for international markets, with plans to launch them from 2025 onwards. This platform has been optimized for native Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) specifications, aiming to maximize interior space, comfort, vision, and incorporate advanced electrical and electronic architecture, connectivity, software, and over-the-air capabilities.

The ‘Avinya’ concept was initially introduced in 2022. Partnering with JLR to leverage the EMA platform is expected to enhance the global competitiveness and future readiness of the ‘Avinya’ series, according to Tata Motors.

Anand Kulkarni, Chief Product Officer of TPEM, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “Being built on an architecture that is equipped with the latest advances in new age technology, software, and artificial intelligence, Avinya will spawn a new breed of world-class EVs, with global standards in efficiency and range.”

Thomas Mueller, Executive Director of Product Engineering at JLR, praised the collaboration as an example of strong synergy and knowledge-sharing within the Tata Group, aimed at delivering value and driving innovation.

This strategic alliance between Tata Motors and JLR underscores the growing commitment to electric mobility and the development of cutting-edge EVs, aligning with global trends towards sustainable and environmentally responsible transportation solutions.
