Infineon completes acquisition of GaN Systems, becoming a leading GaN powerhouse

In a significant move towards advancing energy-efficient and carbon-saving solutions, Infineon Technologies AG has successfully closed the acquisition of GaN Systems Inc., an Ottawa-based company renowned for its expertise in gallium nitride (GaN)-based power conversion solutions and application knowledge. All necessary regulatory approvals were secured, officially marking GaN Systems as part of the Infineon family.

The acquisition, an all-cash transaction, came to fruition after the definitive agreement was announced on March 2, 2023. Infineon invested a substantial $830 million, utilizing its existing liquidity for the purpose of this strategic acquisition.

GaN technology is gaining prominence as a key enabler for creating more energy-efficient solutions that contribute to CO2 reduction, aligning with global efforts for decarbonization. Infineon’s CEO, Jochen Hanebeck, highlighted the acquisition’s significance, stating, “GaN technology is paving the way for more energy-efficient and CO2-saving solutions that support decarbonization. The acquisition of GaN Systems significantly accelerates our GaN roadmap and further strengthens Infineon’s leadership in power systems through mastery of all relevant power semiconductor technologies. We welcome our new colleagues from GaN Systems to Infineon.”

With the addition of GaN Systems, Infineon now boasts a combined team of 450 GaN experts and a substantial portfolio of more than 350 GaN patent families. This positions the company as a formidable leader in power semiconductors and considerably enhances its time-to-market capabilities.

Infineon and GaN Systems bring complementary strengths in intellectual property (IP) and application knowledge to the table. Additionally, they have a well-established customer project pipeline, placing Infineon in a prime position to address the burgeoning opportunities in fast-growth applications within the semiconductor industry.

This strategic move underscores Infineon’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of innovative technology solutions, while also advancing sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives in line with the ever-increasing global focus on decarbonization. The acquisition of GaN Systems strengthens Infineon’s capabilities and expertise, promising to yield ground-breaking advancements in power semiconductor technology in the years to come.

The completion of this acquisition marks a noteworthy milestone for both Infineon and GaN Systems, setting the stage for a promising future in power semiconductors and energy-efficient solutions.
