Atmosic Technologies and Nichicon Corporation Join Forces to Revolutionize IoT with Sustainable Energy Harvesting Solutions

Atmosic Technologies and Nichicon Corporation, two leading innovators in the field of sustainable IoT solutions, have announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at revolutionizing the Internet of Things (IoT) industry.

In a significant step towards creating more sustainable and efficient IoT devices, Atmosic Technologies and Nichicon Corporation have joined forces to provide developers with an innovative energy harvesting solution tailored specifically for small form factor IoT devices.

The core of this collaboration lies in the fusion of Nichicon’s Small Lithium Titanate Rechargeable Battery (SLB) technology with Atmosic’s ATM33e series of wireless Bluetooth energy harvesting Systems-on-Chip (SoCs). This strategic partnership offers an integrated solution that promises unparalleled ease of integration for wearables and other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Atmosic’s ATM33e SoC stands out with its exceptionally low power consumption, a critical factor for IoT devices. When combined with Nichicon’s SLB series batteries, this synergy unlocks the potential for extended battery operation within a compact form factor. What sets this collaboration apart is the direct connection between SLB series batteries and Atmosic’s SoC, allowing for recharging from harvested energy sources without the need for a separate power management unit (PMU). This ingenious design results in reduced Bill-of-Materials (BoM) costs and space-saving advantages, empowering developers to create sleek, efficient, and cost-effective IoT designs.

Paul Davis, VP of Product Management at Atmosic, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We look forward to a continued partnership with Nichicon, leveraging our energy harvesting technology across a broad range of customer applications. Atmosic’s ATM33e is one of the most powerful and power-efficient Bluetooth 5.3 SoCs on the market. Our customers can use this complete solution to design cost-effective and sustainable IoT devices.”

Craig Anderson, President at Nichicon America, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability, saying, “Nichicon is deeply committed to reducing the tech industry’s impact on the environment, including the growing problem of battery waste. Our partnership with Atmosic marks another milestone in creating a more sustainable IoT for generations to come.”

Nichicon’s SLB rechargeable batteries are engineered to support a high number of charge and discharge cycles, estimated at approximately 25,000 cycles. These batteries excel in low-temperature operation and exhibit superior power density compared to typical rechargeable batteries. What sets them apart is their compatibility with various energy harvesting sources, making them particularly well-suited for consumer, commercial, and industrial IoT applications. Additionally, SLB devices, boasting Lithium Titanium Oxide technology, possess outstanding safety characteristics, including resistance to combustion from punctures and other forms of damage.

For applications where space is at a premium, Atmosic’s ATM33e is available in an ultra-small chip-scale package (CSP). For more traditional use cases, it is offered in 5x5mm and 7x7mm QFN packages. The ATM33e includes an integrated Arm Cortex-M33F microcontroller equipped with up to 1536MB of non-volatile memory and 128KB of RAM, providing developers with a versatile platform for IoT innovation.

This strategic partnership between Atmosic and Nichicon marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of IoT technology, as it addresses both power efficiency and environmental sustainability. As IoT devices continue to proliferate across various industries, this collaboration holds the promise of reducing energy consumption and contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.
