STMicroelectronics Unveils Highly Scalable STSPIN9 Motor-Drive Series for Industrial and Home Appliances

Leading semiconductor company, STMicroelectronics, has launched its cutting-edge STSPIN9 high-current motor-drive series. This includes the release of two innovative devices, STSPIN948 and STSPIN958, designed for applications ranging from high-end industrial machinery to professional home appliances.

Innovative Solutions for a Broad Range of Applications

The STSPIN9 series aims to revolutionize motor driving by offering a slew of features, including integrated PWM control logic, a 58V power stage, and two operational amplifiers for current sensing. These ICs are optimized for driving both brushed DC motors and bipolar stepper motors, streamlining the bill of materials while offering flexibility and scalability to designers.

STSPIN948: A Flexible Approach for Varied Motors

The STSPIN948, a 4.5A device, boasts two full bridges that can be configured in multiple ways to drive differently-rated motors. It also supports up to five different driving modes, offering developers unparalleled flexibility. The IC is housed in a compact 7mm x 7mm VQFPN48 package.

STSPIN958: High-Current, Scalable Options

On the other hand, the 5.0A STSPIN958 offers a single full bridge capable of driving higher-current unidirectional motors. With the same choices for PWM-based fixed off-time or programmable threshold, the IC supports seven different driving methods and comes in a 5mm x 5mm VFQFPN32 package.

Beyond Flexibility: Focus on Efficiency and Protection

Both ICs allow designers to program the output transistors’ slew rate, optimizing for power consumption and electromagnetic compatibility. Built-in dead time prevents shoot-through, and low on-resistance MOSFETs maximize operating efficiency. In addition, both ICs come with comprehensive protection features like overcurrent, overtemperature, and short-circuit protection, along with under-voltage lockout (UVLO).

Evaluation Boards for Quick Development

To facilitate rapid development, STMicroelectronics has made available affordable evaluation boards, the EVSPIN948 and EVSPIN958. These are compatible with most STM32 Nucleo boards and the Arduino® UNO R3 connector.

Pricing and Availability

The STSPIN948 and STSPIN958 are already in production, with prices starting at $2.35 and $1.42 respectively for orders of 1000 pieces. For more information, please visit here
